The rotation between shoulder girdle and pelvis induces high loads onto the outer fibres of the disc. Additional side-bending increases the loading even more. A setup position which is more upright decreases the side-bending and therefore decreases the loading of the disc. Therefore, the use of longer clubs is the most efficient tool to reduce the load on the spine during the swing.

The P.G.A. Golf Professionals Jody Morris and Darran Bird both started playing golf in their childhood, and as everyone else, played standard golf clubs. After they first met in Erster Golfclub Westpfalz in 1992 it was clear they had one thing in common ? a discontentment that there were so many differing opinions on the teaching of golf. And with that the foundations of Made To Measure Golf were laid. From that moment, Jody Morris and Darran Bird tried to get to the roots of an ever-recurring phenomenon in their daily work as golf teachers. Why was it that some of their pupils made good progress whilst others had major problems with both grip and swing? Talent, they felt, could not be the only reason. Intensive observation and a continuous questioning of teaching methods led them to only one conclusion. Correctly fitted equipment was the missing link.Due to the individuality of different body sizes it became apparent that it was time to turn their attention to the size of club and it?s effect on posture.
With the help of Physicians and Physiotherapists and after several studies, measurements and tests, Darran Bird, aided by Jody Morris, developed a special measuring system, which has now been patented. Based on all the information won from this process it is now possible to manufacture individually fitted golf sets for every type of golfer, whether he or she is a beginner, advanced or professional. MTM Golf clubs allow a perfect, bio mechanically healthy position, from the largest to smallest golfer, which gives every player the guarantee of having more fun. Golf is then that which every sport should be - Healthy!
1993-2003 Conception, research and development challenging the then current fitting systems and their effect on teaching and injuries to golfers.
2003 MTM Golf was found by Jody Morris & Darran Bird
2003- 2005 Further research and development of golf equipment.
Nov 2003 Experiment to determine the difference in spine movement between conventional golf equipment and golf clubs made to the anatomical proportions of the golfer using Setup Engineering. Tests were conducted at the Bremen Institute for Applied Prevention and Performance Diagnosis in Germany, Result: Setup Engineering promotes a more natural, upright position of the golfer during the swing. Due to this change in the body posture, lateral bending of the spine during the golf swing is reduced.
Nov 2003: Technical University in Munich. 200 sports students were anatomically analysed to obtain data to be used in MTM's Setup Engineering System. A controlled study and questionnaire was conducted to determine whether students preferred conventional golf equipment or Setup Engineering. Result: 70 per cent of those questioned preferred a Setup Engineered golf club.
June 2005 Production of THE BIRD MTM golf clubs.
June 2005 Patent application in Germany for the MTM Measuring System (Setup Engineering)
August 2006 Alpha Clinic Munich. Dr Hoogland, internationally renown back specialist, inserted 2 probes, in a medically controlled environment, into the discs L2-L3, L4-L5 of a voluntary professional golfer. Hundreds of shots were hit and the results showed 19% less pressure in the discs using MTM Setup Engineered clubs compared to standard clubs. This is the first occasion, worldwide, where a (professional) golfer has been tested in such a manner.
March 2008 Presentation at the German PGA Annual General Meeting, where a very positive echo came from the 150 Golf Professionals who attended.
