Whether you are Tiger Woods or are an absolute beginner at golf, your body possesses what we call anatomical intelligence. Maybe you would like to try the following exercise as a demonstration of your anatomical intelligence? Without a golf club or ball, stand up and close your eyes, and keep them closed to enhance your body feeling. Then ask yourself the following question.
If I were going to play golf and wanted to hit the ball long and straight, which stance and body posture would I adopt to maximise my chances of achieving that goal? Change the width of stance from narrow to wide and exaggerate both, and then again choose the position that feels right. Try different angles in the spine. Bend too far forwards, then too upright, then choose the position that feels right. (If you are an accomplished golfer, try to follow your body feeling as apposed to what you are used to).
At this point 99% of you will be in a technically perfect Setup Position to hit a golf ball. The remaining 1% have either read too many golf books or were thinking too much instead of feeling. You will have positioned your body where you feel most balanced, stable and ready to perform a dynamic movement.
Whilst maintaining exactly this position have someone give you your 7 iron. Grip the 7 iron correctly (see Grip) and maintain your chosen position, then let your arms and club hang down in front of you. If you maintained your position and then let your arms and club hang down in front of you, it is very probable that the club, your own 7 iron, did not reach the ground.
Alternatively you can have someone take a picture of you whilst maintaining your chosen position without a club. Then take your 7 iron, make a correct grip, and go into the setup position until the club is touching the ground and then after taking a second picture, subsequently compare the two pictures. By comparison you probably found that you stood more upright without a club and more bent forwards with your 7 iron.
In both cases there are only 2 possibilities. Either there is something wrong with your feeling of balance or the golf club is too small. If there was something wrong with your feeling of balance, then most likely you would have fallen down a few times today already. If you haven?t then the only logical conclusion is the club is too small! If your position in both pictures was the same or if your club did reach the ground, then you are probably less than 165cm tall (around 5 ft 4 inches).
Perhaps you have now asked yourself the following question:
"But my clubs are "Custom Fitted" to my specifications, they must be right for me"?
